1st Grade News - 12/14/15

I stumbled upon this book last year and what a great book for working on retelling and asking/answering questions.  After I finished reading The Gingerbread Pirates aloud, my group cheered and clapped.  :)

Enrichment spelling words for the week of November 30th

Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and I'm thankful for the opportunity to share first grade learning experiences with these kiddos, pictured here sharing their thankful writings.

Occasionally, I make time to take pictures throughout the day. I'm sharing a few pictures of students working independently during centers (daily five).

~ word work center ~ sorting words with long and short vowels

~ word work center ~ making words using the letters in the word 'Thanksgiving'

~ with teacher center ~ word building

~ read-to-self center ~

~ work on writing center ~

As difficult as it is to believe, the last month of the year is upon us and we have just 15 school days before our two-week break in December!

Have a wonderful week!

I received this book as a gift from my 2007-2008 group of first graders and I bring it back every year because I love the message - celebrate your individual differences!

Beautiful work, first grade friends!

(A colleague found and shared this awesome Spookley writing worksheet.  I don't have a signature to provide a link for the original.  I scanned a copy of the worksheet and the link for the scanned document is here.)

Alternate (Enrichment) Spelling List for This Week
Poet, Jack Prelutsky, the book It's Fall by Linda Glaser and time spent outdoors inspired this group to try their hand at poetry. After six revisions, they came up with this little gem.  Nice job, creative first graders!

We add two poems (sometimes more!) to the poetry/song binders every week.  Reading poetry is a wonderful way to build vocabulary, high-frequency word knowledge and improve reading fluency.  Shared writing of poetry is challenging but a lot of fun!
