1st Grade News - August 24, 2015

Link for this week's 1st Grade News

Two years ago, I added this wonderful book to my beginning of the school year book list to integrate into literacy lessons.  Today, I used the book for two purposes; a read-aloud before the children worked on reading independently, and for guided reading.  Before independent reading practice (working on stamina) we talked about how reading allows us to learn.  Students pulled books from our classroom library, identified the genre and shared what can be learned from the books.  During guided reading, we worked on sequencing.  This book inspires students to talk about their favorite books as well so tomorrow students will draw and write about their favorites.

In case you haven't stumbled upon this book yet - it's about Henry, a boy who loves to eat books because he wants to become "the smartest person on Earth."  In the end, Henry picks up a half-eaten book from the floor and begins to read.  He discovers he LOVES to read and might even become "the smartest person on Earth."
