Another activity students are engaged in during the Word Work center is word journaling.  Similar to Write the Room, this is an open-ended activity that allows students to work at independent reading levels to notice spelling patterns, increase high frequency word knowledge, practice word solving strategies and develop vocabulary and word meaning.  The last 5 pages of the journal are for drawing and labeling.  At this time, I limit word journaling to 5 words per day to encourage critical thinking.

During guided reading centers, students work independently while I instruct small groups of children in literacy.  One activity on the workboard is called word work.  During word work, students work with words, spelling patterns, vocabulary, phonics, and high frequency words.  This week, students are recording words on their Write the Room papers based on letter count (page 12).  This is a great open-ended activity that allows for choice and inquiry.  Children choose words from hundreds of books in my classroom, allowing all children to read and write at their independent reading levels.

First graders had a great time creating self-portraits.  Following step-by-step directions from an adorable six year old, these kids did an awesome job with their first directed drawing.

We had a little visitor in Highland Island.  This picture was taken from inside the classroom looking outside and you can see the curious insect on the screen.
