Spookley, the Square Pumpkin!


This week, the students listened to the story, The Legend of Spookley, the Square Pumpkin and created their own Spookley’s.  Next up, the children will work on ‘Text-to-Self’ connections, and a story map. The purpose of the text-to-self activity is to help beginning readers connect with what they are reading; this strategy helps readers better understand the reading content.  The second activity is a story map.  The students will identify the characters, setting and main story events, another strategy for improving reading comprehension


BEE Ready to Learn!

This student was gone for a few days and we missed her dearly!  She didn’t miss a beat upon her return, earning a BEE BUCK for BEEing Responsible and BEEing Ready to Learn.

Listening Center Activity

At the listening center, students listen to and reflect upon quality literature, at and above their independent reading levels.  Many times the children have their own books to look at while listening, but sometimes two children share a book.  These listening center response worksheets were created with consideration to the first grade Common Core State Standards: Reading - Literature and Foundational Skills; Writing; and Language.

After listening to an audiobook at the listening center table, the students move back to their table seats to complete written responses independently.
This shows two of our table 1 friends sharing a book and listening to the story together.  They were listening to Sammy the Seal by Syd Hoff.  (This book is a DRA Level 13-14.)


Center Work Pictures

The children rotate amongst centers with their table groups. On this day, the center rotation included art in place of the listening station. On days when the students don't have a listening station activity, they listen to a book read aloud by me. The read-aloud focus skill changes, based on the literature selection, and always ends with a follow-up discussion that includes personal responses to the story.
You'll see in the pictures, the children used water colors to paint scarecrows, an extension of weekly poetry and book readings about fall; the word work group focused on contractions by putting candy corn puzzles together and reading the words with their center partners.

Daily Literacy Centers

We have centers every day.  There are four center rotations that last about fifteen minutes each.  If students finish an activity before time is up, they are encouraged to work on reading, phonics puzzles or write independently.  During this time, I have individual conferences with students.  Our conference activities vary and are based on individual needs of each student.
