Science with PEEPS!

This will be a four-day exploration, using marshmallow candies to extend learning about solids and liquids. 
On the first day, we'll set up the experiment by placing the Peep candies into 4 cups, each with a different liquid.  The children will record observations of the Peeps in the liquids and write a hypothesis statement.  On days 2 and 3, we'll review vocabulary and the previous day discussions and students will record observations on the backside of the exploration worksheet.  (The worksheet will be folded into four sections to create a table for recording data.) 
On the 4th day, we'll observe the physical (and hopefully chemical) changes and students will write about what happened to the Peep candies.

We had a lot of fun with the Peep exploration while incorporating first grade science study skills!  4 days was just enough time to observe and collect and record data.   The Peeps dissolved in all the liquids, providing meaningful discussion about a solid changing to a liquid.

Each day, the children made notes about their observations in columns numbered 1 through 4.

Students filled their writing pages with details about activities they enjoy with their "peeps".

1st Grade News!

 Our school just finished the One School, One Book program.  All families received a copy of The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary to read during the month of March.  Trivia questions were announced each morning and students eagerly submitted answers in hopes of winning the drawing for the daily trivia contest.
On Thursday, students dressed in comfy-cozy clothes and were treated to a movie and popcorn.  An adorable Ralph also made an appearance in each classroom.

1st Grade News

I'm changing up the homework routine for my first graders and providing an option to work on a book report each week.  Previously, the kiddos completed three spelling worksheets but I noticed most of the students learned their lists by Tuesday or Wednesday.  I hope the book summaries will provide a meaningful extension to their daily reading routine.

We had a lot of fun celebrating the 120th day of school last week!

Counting:  how many times can you blink in 120 seconds?

Students used the letters in the words /One Hundred Twenty/ to make new words. 

When the math activities were completed, students talked with friends and compared their estimates with the actual numbers. 

It doesn't seem possible but we're finishing up our third quarter this week.

St. Patrick's Day


I have a stash of Lucky Charms on hand for a math graphing activity on Tuesday.  Last week, the children interviewed friends and graphed data about their favorite subject in school.

1st Grade News

A few weeks ago, I was complaining about the snow and frigid temperatures and one of my students commented about how grouchy I was with the weather.  Ironically, I was showcasing Eric Carle books in our classroom library so I decided to have a little fun with The Grouchy Ladybug. 
You can find variations of this craft on the web.  I chose a simple, yet fun craft to accompany the student writings.

1st Grade News

We had a wonderful week celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday!

Children wore Dr. Seuss creativity hats with their last names written backwards in honor of Ten Apples Up on Top, by Theo. LeSieg:

We read Horton Hears a Who and worked on the skill of inferencing...

These kids had fun answering the question - "Would you like the Cat in the Hat to visit your house?"



These pictures are from a science exploration we worked on at the end of last week. For this exploration, students used empty and full water bottles to explore force and motion. They worked together to experiment with different surfaces and shapes and answer the question, "What makes objects move the way they do?

They learned a few things, including...

a push is a force.

Shape has an affect on how things move.

Weight has an affect on how things move.

The surface on which an object rolls affects its motion.

They wrote or drew pictures about what they discovered:


 The kiddos also explored the question, "Is the force a push or pull?

Then sorted it out...

We are hopeful for warmer temperatures and outdoor recess this week!
