1st Grade News!

Our final full week of first grade...
This year comes to an end for our students on Wednesday, June 10th.
We ended last week with a fun-filled trip to the zoo!

(I had some problems with my camera; a kind parent chaperone shared a few pictures, thankfully.)

Friendly beavers ~ perhaps the highlight of the zoo visit!  :)

Animal Research

We have an outstanding volunteer in our classroom who made our animal research project a huge success.  Fortunately for my students, our volunteer, who just finished his second year at The Ohio State University, was looking for opportunities to help-out in our school district and he landed in my classroom.

For this project, students gathered information for their animal report using iPads and books in my classroom library.  Mr. Eder (volunteer) worked with students in small groups to introduce several kid-friendly apps for their research.

During the next few sessions, students used this graphic organizer to record "dash facts", a name introduced by Mr. Eder for the skill of note-taking.  In first grade, we work so hard all year on writing in complete sentences so the process of recording one or two words or short phrases for each category was a little challenging for many students.
For their final projects, students added amazing drawings to their reports which we proudly displayed on our hallway bulletin board.

We have an incredible college student volunteering in our classroom and we are so grateful!  Five days a week he works with my first graders, lending a hand and an extra pair of eyes to attend to the needs of 21 kiddos.  He read one on one with each child and took notes about individual reading skills while listening to them read aloud.  He's developed exciting, interactive math lessons and spent time playing games with groups during math workshop.  Last week, students worked on animal research book reports and he worked with small groups to locate animal facts on classroom iPad's.  Most importantly, he took time to get to know each child and provided extra attention and support.

We will be sad when this wonderful future educator has to leave us.
